What we do

Neighbourhood Support is a nationwide community-led movement that brings people and neighbourhoods together to create safe, resilient, and connected communities. We believe that a well-connected community helps to improve safety, resilience, and wellbeing for all.

In Hamilton we have over 25,000 members across the city, with around 1400 streets with a Neighbourhood Support group.

We have strong relationships with the NZ Police, Civil Defence and the Fire and Emergency services.  We work together to minimize crime and antisocial activities and to prepare neighbourhoods for unexpected weather, environmental and other hazardous events.

Membership is completely free. If you aren’t already a member, feel free to head over to our online signup page and we will send you a welcome pack and get you setup in your nearest street group, or help you form a group in your street if there isn’t already one.

Street groups

Neighbourhood Support street groups enable neighbours to come together to Look Out, Reach Out and Help Out. Getting to know the people who live around you enable to create a safe and supportive community.

Street groups will usually have a street coordinator, who is the contact point in the street for setting up meetings, organising events and providing information to residents. What the street group and coordinator does is ultimately up to the street group members – there are no set rules!

We can also install Neighbourhood Support street signs in your street to show that you are safe and connected street, and help deter criminals.

If you are interested in setting up a street group, please contact our Area coordinator

Crime Prevention

Preventing crime is one of the key purposes of Neighbourhood Support. We work very closely with NZ Police, and have a dedicated Police Liaison Officer that works closely with us.

If you are experiencing issues in your neighbourhood, such as theft, vandalism or antisocial activity, please reach out to us. We can help by providing resources to residents in your street and setting up group meetings with our Police Liaison Officer.

Community Connectedness

We run many events throughout the year, aimed at bringing members of the community together.
